St. Louis Cardinals Pick Up Another Veteran Starting Pitcher on Tuesday

One day after reaching an agreement with veteran starting pitcher Lance Lynn, the St. Louis Cardinals have added Kyle Gibson on a one-year deal.

Per MLB on FOX:

The Cardinals are signing Kyle Gibson to a one-year contract with an option for 2025, per @BNightengale

At the time of this posting, the contract terms aren't known, but Lynn's contract could max out around $25 million over a possible two years (one guaranteed, plus option), so you'd have to imagine this will be similar.

The 36-year-old spent the 2023 season with the Baltimore Orioles, helping that team win 101 games and win the American League East. He went 15-9 with a 4.73 ERA.

While Gibson's counting stats are unspectacular (157 strikeouts in 192 innings), he provided plenty of durability last year, making 33 starts for the O's. For a Cardinals team that dealt away Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery, and saw Adam Wainwright retire, they need to make up those innings lost with quality starters.

He just finished his 11th year in the big leagues with the Twins, Rangers, Phillies and Orioles. He was part of the 2022 Phillies team that won the National League pennant and got to the World Series.

Lifetime, he's 104-100 with a 4.54 ERA. A guy who throws strikes, he led the league in hits allowed in 2023 (198).

The following message came on "X" from longtime Orioles' reporter Dan Connolly:

Gibson spent only one year with the Orioles. But he made a huge impact within that clubhouse. Haven’t seen a one-year player have a bigger reach with teammates since Nelson Cruz in 2014.
