The Chicago Cubs will play the San Francisco Giants Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET at the Giants' spring training home, Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Cubs manager David Ross will give the ball to Adrian Sampson, who, at the age of 30 experienced a breakout season in 2022. Sampson, a journeyman, signed a minor league deal with the Cubs and ended up emerging as one of the team's most reliable pitchers in the second half of the season, posting a 3.11 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 132 ERA+ over 104.1 innings pitched in his 19 starts. Sampson is in the running for the Cubs' final spot in the pitching rotation. Marcus Stroman, Jameson Taillon, Drew Smyly and Justin Steele appear to be locks to open the season in the rotation. Sampson is competing against rookies Javier Assad and Hayden Wesneski for the no. 5 spot in the rotation.

The Giants will throw veteran Anthony DeSclafani. DeSclafani made just six starts, logging only 19 innings in 2022, having to miss most of the season due to undergoing right ankle surgery. DeSclafani is entering the second year of his three-year, $36 million contract that he signed with the Giants in November 2021.
