The Chicago White Sox will play the Chicago Cubs Friday at 3:05 p.m. ET at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona.

Lucas Giolito will start for the White Sox. After struggling at the Major League level early in his career with the White Sox and the Washington Nationals, Giolito found success from 2019 through 2021, before hitting a snag last season. Giolito posted a 11-9 record, 4.90 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 81 ERA+ in 30 starts, pitching 161.2 innings. Giolito is looking to bounce back in 2023, under new White Sox manager Pedro Grifol.

Drew Smyly will get the ball for the Cubs. Smyly appears to be a lock for the Cubs' pitching rotation to start the season, however, his spring is off to a slow start. He is 0-1 with a 11.25 ERA.

Smyly is expected to open the season in the Cubs' rotation alongside Marcus Stroman, Jameson Taillon and Justin Steele.
