In this story:

The Chicago White Sox suffered a devastating 4-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night, falling after a walk-off home run from Christopher Morel.

The loss continued a very disappointing season on the South Side. After entering the season with serious playoff aspirations, the White Sox 48-73 and in fourth place in the American League Central. They also underwent a massive sell-off at the trade deadline and appear headed for a major rebuild yet again.

In the loss, Sox slugger Gavin Sheets hit a home run, which was his ninth of the year. That's a low home run total for him - but also represents a major issue with the White Sox in general.

Per Jesse Rogers of ESPN:

Gavin Sheets hits the White Sox MLB low 23rd home run from a lefty this season. It gives them a 3-0 lead over the Cubs and potentially a sweep of their 2 game series at Wrigley Field. For comparison, Miami has 31 home runs from lefties, second fewest. Ohtani has 42.

Yes, the White Sox didn't end up holding that lead, but to only have 23 homers from lefties as a team? That's astonishing. Part of it is the way the White Sox are constructed. Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert Jr., Tim Anderson, Jake Burger and a number of the players the Sox have relied on this season are right-handed. But another part of it is the astonishing lack of production from guys like Yasmani Grandal or Andrew Benintendi, who hit switch and lefty. Signed to a five-year deal this offseason, Benintendi has just two home runs and 32 RBI.

The White Sox take on the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.
