Toronto Blue Jays Described as on "Periphery" of Yamamoto Sweepstakes

According to Ken Rosenthal of 'The Athletic," the Toronto Blue Jays are on the "periphery" of the Yoshinobu Yamamoto free agent sweepstakes.

He made the comments as part of the "Foul Territory" podcast and you can see the comments below:

Rosenthal described the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers as being serious contenders for his services, and we also know that the Red Sox are heavily involved in the running. Rosenthal also described the Phillies as on the periphery.

While having Yamamoto in the fold would be nice for the Jays, and would give them a nice PR win after losing out on Shohei Ohtani, he's not really the biggest need for the organization.

The team already has a solid pitching staff with Jose Berrios, Chris Bassitt, Yusei Kikuchi, and Kevin Guasman. They also still have Alek Manoah in the fold, who is a former All-Star looking to rediscover his form.

What the Jays can really use is offense, considering that Kevin Kiermaier, Matt Chapman, Whit Merrifield and Brandon Belt are all free agents off last year's roster. It's because of this that the Jays went so hard for Ohtani and it's also because of this that the team has been heavily connected to former MVP Cody Bellinger.

Toronto is looking to capitalize on a window of opportunity here. They have a great staff and also still have Bo Bichette and Vlad Guerrero Jr. on affordable contracts.  Toronto made the playoffs each of the last two years but failed to win a single playoff game, and they are looking to fix that in 2024.
