The Mariners added to their roster over the winter, trading for outfielder Teoscar Hernandez and second baseman Kolten Wong. The club also signed free agents AJ Pollock and Tommy La Stella.

La Stella signed a three-year, $18.75 million contract with the San Francisco Giants in February 2021. After an injury-riddled first two seasons with the club, the Giants designated La Stella for assignment in January. The Giants will pay the remainder of his contract, while the Mariners will pay him the league minimum.

From 2016 through 2020, La Stella posted a cumulative .358 On Base Percentage for the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics. He was named an American League All-Star in 2019. He hopes to return to form in his first season with his new franchise.

The Mariners are coming off their first postseason appearance since 2001. The 2001 Mariners won 116 games along with the American League West division title. The Mariners seek to claim their first division title in 22 years, in 2023.
