Chael Sonnen Urges Ex-UFC Stars Jorge Masvidal & Nate Diaz to Pull Out of Boxing Deal

Sonnen believes Diaz vs. Masvidal under boxing rules could be a financial disaster.

Chael Sonnen doesn't believe that Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz will make as much money for a boxing match as they think they will.

Happy Punch was the first to report that Masvidal will be coming out of retirement from combat sports competition to meet his old foe Diaz in a boxing match. The two battled in the main event of UFC 244 back in November 2019. Ariel Helwani followed up on the Happy Punch report, saying the matchup is in the works.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen expressed his belief that something is off with this fight promotion.

"This is amongst, if not the worst, idea that I have ever heard in a meaningful period of time unless your goal is like Brewster's Millions to see how fast you can go out of money. Now, the only reason that boxing survives on any level, this is from Golden Gloves to the pros, the only thing that has kept that sport alive is that you keep finding a bigger fool who's willing to lose money. I don't say that to put boxing down."

Sonnen went as far as to urge Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz to pull out of the deal if it isn't too late.

"I'm just telling you right off the bat, the release that I read only had three points, all three of 'em were a disaster," Sonnen said. "Get out. My fear is not to protect a promoter in boxing, this is what they do. If this guy doesn't lose his money on that, he'll lose it somewhere else. It's just what they do. My fear is that Nate and/or Jorge are the ones putting the money. I don't want them losing their money. I don't want them doing that, and I don't know that they are. I'm just suggesting on this piece of information that I got."
