The Rock is Exploring a New Career Path

The Rock (real name Dwayne Johnson) has showcased his musical ability over the years, and now he's considering a more focused career there.

The former world champion has already transitioned into Hollywood. With music, he has dipped his toes in before; he made his rap debut on "Face Off" by Tech N9ne, and he starred in Moana, both the animated musical (and its sequel) and the live-action adaptation, where he memorably sang the song "You're Welcome."

Now, Johnson has released "Your Dad," a new song he co-wrote with Iam Tongi, and it might not be a one-off. In a new interview, Johnson discussed his musical work so far and his ambition to do more going forward.

The Rock is eager to express himself in music

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Johnson discussed working on his new song and collaborating with Tongi. He was asked about his previous aim to be a singer and whether it was something he wanted to dig deeper into now. Johnson confirmed that he was exploring the possibility.

"I’m exploring that now," he said. "As you roll along in life, I’ve been real fortunate to be part of some really cool projects, and love it. But music has always been such an anchor for me, and very specifically in genres that I love, like country music, traditional country music. And we’re exploring that now.

Johnson made it clear that, no matter what he's doing, he wants to "feel like I’m just running towards it," and he also said he wants to do things for himself, as there are plenty of ventures that put a lot of pressure on him.

He also reiterated that he wants his work to resonate with him, saying, "the things we do...we must feel it in here, behind our rib cage." He noted that there are larger things at play when he does movies, but this one song was just for his daughters.

Regarding his future in music, Johnson was asked what that could look like, and he said it could be something in the "old-school soul genre, with some country flavor." He named a few influences and said he'd like to explore how he could borrow from that.

"I love old-school soul," he said. "Sam Cooke. From Sam Cooke, again, to Merle Haggard. That’s how I grew up. And those were my strong influences from my dad. My dad was a pro wrestler, and we lived on the road...Every night a different city. And so that’s all he would listen to. So my thought is, 'Oh, man, I wanna go and write and sing and explore the things that I love.'"

Whether Johnson ventures further into music or not, there's no doubt that he's a versatile performer, and it's fair to say that his fans will be eagerly waiting to see what the future holds for him.
