The 6-foot-9, 215-pound Chatfield was a force for a Clarkston team that made the second round of the 2A state tournament this past season before losing to Pullman 64-52.
Chatfield committed to WSU in February. He also received interest from Eastern Washington, Idaho and Idaho State, according to 247 Sports.
Smith was hired away from University of San Francisco late last month to replace Ernie Kent, who was fired shortly after the season after posting a .372 winning percentage over the course of five seasons.
