The Match-up:

Separated by 283 miles, Pierce County and Rockmart will face off for the first time ever, and it’ll be for the Class 2A state championship inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Dec. 12.

On paper, this matchup has the makings to be a terrific one. Both teams relatively breezed through their respective quadrants before Pierce County beat Fitzgerald 35-7 and Rockmart beat Cook 34-24.

Rockmart wasn’t given much of a chance to make the Class 2A finals this season.

The tournament favorite Thomson, who won the 2A state title last season, was bounced in the second round by Toombs County, who was then beaten by Rockmart. Appling County, another tournament favorite that handed Pierce County its only loss this season, was knocked off by Cook in the second round, who was then beaten by Rockmart Friday night.

Pierce County might have the slight edge in this one, but it’s a very winnable game for Rockmart, who will be looking for their first state title since 1950. Pierce County last won 2020.
