Two San Diego student-athletes sue Gov. Gavin Newsom, California health department over youth sports ban

A lawsuit was filed on Thursday in San Diego Superior Court over the current ban on youth sports in the state of California due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A lawsuit was filed on Thursday in San Diego Superior Court over the current ban on youth sports in the state of California due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The lawsuit lists Nicholas Gardinera of Scripps Ranch High School and Cameron Woolsey of Mission Hills High School as the plaintiffs as well as their guardians Marlon Gardinera and Richard Woolsey.

The two senior athletes allege in the lawsuit that not being able to play football during their senior season has robbed them of the opportunity to secure a Division I college scholarship.

Listed as defendants in the case are the County of San Diego, Wilma J. Wooten (San Diego Public Health Officer), Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Public Health.

Youth football is allowed to resume in California when counties reach the "Orange" tier as listed in the CDPH's "Blueprint for a safer economy." The majority of counties in California currently sit in the "Purple" tier.
