Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Corbin Martin (25) throws in the bullpen during spring training

Diamondbacks Lose Corbin Martin to Brewers on Waivers

Once considered the centerpiece in the 2019 deadline deal involving Zack Greinke, the right-hander will be moving on to another organization.

Last week, the Diamondbacks designated Corbin Martin for assignment in a corresponding roster move after selecting Kevin Newman's contract from Triple-A Reno. Martin's tenure with the D-backs came to an official end, as Curt Hogg from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Brewers claimed the 28-year-old right-hander. Martin will report to the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate in Nashville.

Martin was considered the centerpiece in the 2019 trade deadline deal that sent Zack Greinke to the Houston Astros. Josh Rojas, J.B. Bukauskas, and Seth Beer were also part of the return the D-backs got in the deal. All four players in the trade are no longer in the D-backs organization. Injuries were the recurring theme for Martin in Arizona. He was already recovering from Tommy John surgery when traded, but a setback in his rehab prevented him from pitching at all in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, he had lengthy stints on the injured list while on an optional assignment to Triple-A Reno.

After converting to a full-time reliever in 2023, it looked like Martin was finally able to regain his velocity and was regularly operating in the 96-98 MPH range. Based on how he looked that spring, he had a decent shot to not only make the team but be an impact arm. However, pitching against the Milwaukee Brewers in a Spring Training game, he tore the lat tendon in his right shoulder and missed the year after undergoing surgery. He came back late in spring in 2024, but a roster crunch resulted in him getting designated on April 7th.
