We have an update on an old friend, and it's not a positive one.

Chicago Cubs designated hitter Edwin Rios was designated for assignment and then outrighted to their Triple-A affiliate Iowa Cubs, per Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune.

Rios played in just 18 games for the Cubs this season, hitting .071/.235/.214 with one home run and two RBI. He spent most of the year with Triple-A Iowa, putting up a line of .258/.366/.444 over 35 games.

There was no previous indication that Rios had been DFA'd, but the decision to outright him opens up one spot on the Cubs' 40-man roster with the trade deadline coming up on Tuesday.

Rios had previously spent parts of four seasons with the Dodgers before he was DFA'd by LA in 2022.

In total, he slashed .219/.299/.492 with 20 home runs and 42 RBI over 112 games in Dodger blue.

For Rios now, he'll try to do well for the Iowa Cubs in an attempt to make it back to the major leagues, but if he can, his MLB future in all likelihood lies with another team.

That said, he has shown a penchant for the long ball during his career, so it may not be all that long until the 29-year-old is back getting his hacks in at the sport's top level in some capacity.
