The Philadelphia Phillies opened their 2023 MLB Draft by improving their depth at third base and ended it by drafting a middle infield prospect from a Men’s College World Series participant.

The Phillies went with a third baseman, Aidan Miller, from Mitchell High School in Florida with their first-round pick.

To some scouts he was the best high school corner infielder in the draft class with plus-power potential.

That last pick turned out to be second baseman Pierce Bennett, who played for Wake Forest, which was the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament but was unable to reach the MCWS Final in Omaha, Neb.

The Phillies actually went with prep players with each of their first selections. Along with Miller, they took Devin Saltiban, an outfielder from Hilo, Hawaii, in the third round, and TayShaun Walton, an outfielder from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

The Phillies then took college players with their next four selections, including Minnesota’s George Klassen and Missouri State’s Jake Eddington.

Philadelphia has a bonus pool of $5.185 million to pay its draft picks.
