New York Yankees Opener With Cleveland Guardians Postponed

Heavy rain in the Cleveland area means that the New York Yankees and the Guardians will make up Friday’s game with a doubleheader on Saturday.

The New York Yankees will get an extra day off thanks to bad weather in Cleveland, which forced the Guardians and MLB to postpone Friday’s opener at Progressive Field.

The Guardians made the announcement around 1 p.m. eastern.

The Yankees and the Guardians will now play a split doubleheader on Saturday, with the make-up game starting at 12:10 p.m.. The second game, which is the originally scheduled game for Saturday, will begin at 6:10 p.m.

Gates for the first game will open at 11 a.m. while gates for the second game will open at 5 p.m. Fans will have to leave Progressive Field in between games.

For those with tickets for Friday’s game, they may use those to enter the make-up game only. A separate ticket will be needed for the night game. For those holding tickets for Saturday’s game, those will be used for the second game of the doubleheader.

Friday’s game was to feature Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt (0-0, 4.66) against Cleveland right-hander Carlos Carrasco (0-0, 4.50) in a matchup of the teams with the two best records in the American League. The Yankees’ web site has a TBD next to the starting pitchers for both the Yankees and the Guardians.

Saturday’s game was always scheduled for 6:10 p.m. and is set to feature Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (0-0, 3.00) against Cleveland right-hander Triston McKenzie (1-1, 4.00).

The series wraps up on Sunday at 1:40 p.m. with Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (1-1, 3.50) facing Guardians left-hander Logan Allen (2-0, 4.60).

After the conclusion of the series, the Yankees continue their road trip and head to Toronto for a series that begins on Monday.
