These Yankees Relievers Will Begin Season on IL

The Yankees will lose two relievers to the IL to begin the season.

The Yankees have lost two pieces of their bullpen to the IL.

In addition to announcing starting pitcher Carlos Rodon will start the season on the IL with a left forearm strain, the same goes for a pair of relievers in Lou Trivino (elbow strain) and Tommy Kahnle (right biceps tendinitis).

The Yankees acquired Trivino from the Oakland Athletics at last season's trade deadline, and he will now be added to the long list of Yankees pitchers to go down with an injury since this date.

Trivino pitched to a 1.66 ERA in 25 appearances for the Yankees down the stretch and is expected to be a key piece of their bullpen this season.

As for Kanhle, he was initially shut down from throwing last Friday. While manager Aaron Boone was optimistic that he'd be ready for Opening Day, GM Brian Cashman revealed Kanhle will also start the year on the IL.

The Yankees brought Kahnle back this offseason after he spent the last two years with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The righty underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020, knocking him out for the entire 2021 season. He missed the majority of last season with right forearm inflammation, but returned down the stretch to throw 8.2 innings of one-run ball. Kahnle's first stint with the Yankees lasted from the 2017 trade deadline to 2020.
