Superstar Pitcher Reportedly Looking For Deal That Could Be In Yankees' Range

Landing the Cy Young Award winner could be a game-changer for New York

Opening Day is just about here and somehow some of the top free agents still are available.

Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery still haven't signed new deals yet and at this rate may not be ready for Opening Day. There's still no indication that a deal is imminent despite being the top players remaining in free agency.

The New York Yankees have been linked to Snell on countless occasions and that will continue to be the case until he signs elsewhere. He was looking for a massive, long-term deal and even got offered one by the Yankees, but rejected it.

Snell was looking for a larger deal at the time and New York pivoted to Marcus Stroman. The two-time Cy Young Award winner seems to have softened his asking price, though.

The lefty reportedly now is open to a short-term deal with opt-outs, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Star free agent Jordan Montgomery still seeks a long deal while reigning (National League) Cy Young winner Blake Snell is fine doing a short-term deal with opt-outs," Heyman said.

Much has been made about the fact that a massive deal is unlikely for the Yankees because they would face a massive tax penalty. A deal certainly still is unlikely, but not unfathomable.

New York seemingly is going all-in on the 2024 campaign and if it could add Snell there would be a real chance it could take home a World Series title.

If the Yankees could land Snell for one year -- although it would be an expensive year -- he could help out in a major way and then the two sides could reconvene next offseason. Signing Juan Soto to a long-term deal will be the team's priority, but if they fail to do so they could use that money for Snell.

Landing Snell to a long-term deal right now could impact the money needed to give to Soto next offseason, but a one-year deal could make a lot of sense.
