The New York Yankees recently designated a former elite prospect for assignment and it didn't take long for another club to put a claim in.

New York recently activated relief pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga from the injured list and designated former No. 3 prospect Deivi García for assignment Monday. García didn't remain on waivers for long as the Chicago White Sox reportedly placed a claim on Thursday on the righty, according to Newsday Sports' Erik Boland.

"Hearing Deivi Garcia was claimed off waivers by the White Sox today," Boland said.

García began his professional career in 2016 for the Yankees' Dominican Summer League club. The righty moved up the New York farm system quickly afterward. García made his big league debut in 2020 and made six starts for New York compiling a 4.98 ERA. At one point it seemed like García would be an impact arm for the Yankees for the foreseeable future, but he never was able to get his footing at the big league level.

García bounced around between the big leagues and minor leagues from 2020 through the 2023 campaign before being designated for assignment by New York. Overall, García appeared in 10 games at the big league level with the Yankees. The former elite prospect compiled a 4.84 ERA and struck out 43 batters in 48 1/3 innings pitched.

Chicago was one of the biggest sellers ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline and could use another arm. García at one point was one of the top prospects in the New York farm system and is just 24 years old. He likely will get more of an opportunity in Chicago than he would have with the Yankees so this may be a win for him.
