Yankees Almost Signed Super Utility Man But Missed Out To Dodgers

New York tried to sign the veteran utility man but missed out

The New York Yankees almost landed a veteran utility man recently.

New York has been in the news recently because many have speculated that the club could make another addition to the starting rotation. The Yankees have been linked to two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell on multiple occasions but he seems to be out of the club's price range.

While this is the case, it wouldn't be too surprising to see the club add more depth to the club on a smaller deal.

New York seemingly attempted to do so recently and tried to sign veteran Enrique Hernández, but missed out to the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to the utility man on Foul Territory.

"Coming off back-to-back down years and having half of the league's owners being bankrupt wasn't ideal," Hernández said. "There was no communication, then a little communication, then dead silence, then a little communication, then dead silence, and really things didn't start picking up until the last three weeks or so.

"At the end, the (Detroit Tigers) were very interested. The (Los Angeles Angels) were there but never really made an offer. The (San Francisco Giants) were kind of in there but they were waiting until the end to make an offer and didn't end up making an offer...At the end, it came down to the Dodgers or Yankees, big market only. I choose the Dodgers because they have a lot of left-handed hitters."

Hernández has spent time with the Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Boston Red Sox throughout his 10-year big league career. The veteran can help out all across the diamond and would've been a solid pickup for New York but the club couldn't get a deal done.
