Yankees Had 'Extensive' Talks About Blockbuster Trade For Superstar Pitcher

New York attempted to land one of the top young pitchers in baseball

The New York Yankees certainly have been busy.

New York had a disappointing 2023 season and responded by being one of the most active teams in baseball this offseason. The Yankees made a plethora of additions including Juan Soto, Marcus Stroman, and Alex Verdugo.

Although the Yankees made a few additions, the starting rotation still has some question marks.

New York has been linked to two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell but a signing seems unlikely at this point. The Yankees also were linked to Chicago White Sox superstar Dylan Cease but didn't get a deal done.

It's not from a lack of trying, though, as New York had "extensive" trade talks with Chicago, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.

"The Chicago White Sox never came close to receiving an offer for ace Dylan Cease that tempted them to trade him, despite extensive talks with the Yankees," Nightengale said. "They now plan to likely keep him until the July 30 trade deadline."

Cease was mentioned in trade rumors for much of the offseason but still is a member of the White Sox at this time. The 28-year-old may still end up getting dealt ahead of the trade deadline, but he at least will begin the season with Chicago.

It wouldn't be surprising to see the Yankees re-engage with Chicago in the summer for a possible deal. Cease is the exact type of pitcher the Yankees could use to help take the club to another level. Don't be surprised if talks pick back up.
