Yankees Star Hints That 2024 Season Could Be His Last With New York

One Yankees star could be playing elsewhere shortly

The New York Yankees' roster could end up looking completely different in 2025.

New York is expected to be one of the top teams in the American League in 2024 but payroll decisions could end up altering the club heading into 2025. Retaining superstar slugger Juan Soto will be the team's top priority and he will land a massive contract whether it is with New York or someone else.

If the Yankees were to re-sign Soto, they likely would lose other important players in free agency. The player who most likely could find himself playing elsewhere certainly is star second baseman, Gleyber Torres.

Torres found his name in trade rumors over the last year but still is with the Yankees. While this is the case, he knows that this could be his last season with the club, according to The Athletic's Chris Kirschner.

"Hard business decisions are coming for the Yankees," Kirschner said. "The team has Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas on the 40-man roster. Both could fill in for Torres at second base at a significantly cheaper rate, albeit perhaps less productive. The reality that this is his final season in The Bronx has entered Torres' mind.

"I can't lie, sometimes I think that it's going to be my last year here," Torres said as transcribed by Kirschner. "I don't know the business plan for next year. It's just motivation for myself. I always say we play for another team sometimes. It's a business. I don't know the plan for the Yankees or myself."

Torres has grown into a fan favorite in New York and one of the top second basemen in baseball. Losing him would be a huge loss for the club, but it's unclear at this point what will happen.
