2023 NBA Draft: G League Elite Camp Recap

The G League Elite Camp has just finished up and we were able to learn a lot about the 44 prospects that attended the event. What are some of the things that we learned?

The G League Elite Camp invited 44 prospects hoping to hear their name called on draft night. Out of the 44 prospects, only eight of them got invited to the NBA Draft Combine. Let’s talk about some notable information now that the event is over.

Five-on-Five Standouts

Johni Broome was the only prospect to average 20 points in the G League Elite Camp scrimmages. Broome did a lot of his work inside the paint showcasing a solid post hook and touch on the inside. The Auburn big man also made two 3-pointers. Broome was doing an impressive job protecting the rim and rebounding.

Sir’Jabari Rice has really helped himself in these pre-draft camps. He has the most NBA ready skill in this camp and that’s his elite pump-fake. The Texas guard consistently got defenders to fall for his fakes. What makes his pump-fakes dangerous is that he passes and shoots from that same pocket. Rice was one of the most vocal players in the scrimmages from what I heard.

Colin Castleton was the biggest snub to not receive an NBA Draft Combine invite but his two-way production didn’t go unnoticed. The Florida big man was finishing well around the rim as he does a really good job of utilizing his size inside the paint. The shot-blocker protected the rim effectively. The defensive big arguably had the best feel for the game amongst everyone at the camp.

Who Measured Well

Clifford Omoruyi measured in with the biggest hands and wingspan. He ranked top three in six out of the seven measurements. The Rutgers big man was nearly top in the country in made dunks due to his bounce and massive reach.

Charles Bediako was first in standing reach while also having one of the longest wingspans in the entire camp. He ranked top three in three out of the seven measurements. Bediako was thriving as a roll-man and rim runner during his time at the camp.

Taevion Kinsey nearly had a plus-seven wingspan which is really impressive considering his high level vertical athleticism. The athletic guard had low body fat and tested well all-around.

Top Performers in Athletic Testing

Matthew Murrell tested better than anyone else in the vertical jumps. The guard ranked first in the maximum vertical jump and second in the standing vertical jump. The bouncy guard also was third in three-quarter court sprint.

Markquis Nowell lacks size but makes a lot of it up athletically. In the maximum vertical jump he ranked in second place. The high level point guard came in first place in the pro lane. Nowell is a speedy lead guard with bounce and playmaking ability.

Jazian Gortman had one of the highest vertical jumps in the G League Elite Camp as he placed third in the maximum vertical jump. Gortman also measured extremely well and produced in the scrimmages which resulted in him getting invited.

Top Shooters in Shooting Drills

Antoine Davis shot the lights out in the shooting drills as he placed first in three out of the four drills and in the one drill he didn’t place first, he placed second. Davis is second in all-time points scored in division one basketball history.

Hunter Tyson finished top three in three out of the four shooting drills. He wasn’t shy at all in the scrimmages as he was third in most field goals attempted during the two games. The combination of size and elite shooting ability led to him getting invited to the NBA Draft Combine.

Landers Nolley II came in first place in the spot-up shooting drill. The Cincinnati wing shot five-for-eleven during the scrimmages. Nolley is known for his high level shooting ability and shot-making versatility.

Players Invited to NBA Draft Combine

There are eight players that received an invite to the NBA Draft Combine and these players are Tosan Evbuomwan, Jazian Gortman, Hunter Tyson, Johni Broome, PJ Hall, Dillon Jones, Kendric Davis, and Sir’Jabari Rice. The NBA Draft Combine will take place from May 15th to the 21st.
