Prospect Profile

After two seasons at Purdue in which he was more of a complimentary piece, Kaufman-Renn has experienced a breakout junior season for the Boilermakers. He’s seen a significant jump in nearly every statistical category, including his shooting splits, which makes it even more impressive given his production has scaled from an efficiency standpoint with a more prominent role.

Kaufman-Renn has a unique blend of strength and mobility, which results in an interesting style of play. He’s a good decision-maker for his size and has proven to be a productive pick-and-roll screener, which should translate well at the next level.

The biggest knock on Kaufman-Renn’s game is the fact that he isn’t a 3-point shooter. He will take perimeter shots from time to time, but overall, he isn’t enough of a volume threat from outside for opposing teams to have to guard him beyond the arc. He’s also a poor free throw shooter, which doesn’t help his case as a future floor spacer.

A former top-50 recruit in his high school class, Kaufman-Renn has taken time to develop into the player he is today. Now that he has three college seasons under his belt, he is beginning to make the case that he has NBA upside. If he doesn’t end up making the professional leap after this season, expect him to be one of the better returning players next season at the collegiate level.
