Prospect Profile

Byrd is a breakout third-year player at San Diego State with good positional size on the perimeter. From being a redshirt freshman to a solid bench contributor in year two to now a prominent starter at the collegiate level, the 6-foot-7 prospect’s progression is promising as NBA teams project his ceiling.

On the offensive end, Byrd operates as a jumbo guard or wing with a 3-and-D skillset. He’s a good decision-maker on both ends and is effective on or off the ball. When he does get the opportunity to handle the ball, Byrd can make things happen for himself and others. He’s a quality shot-maker with passing upside and has shined in an increased role this season. His 3-point shot is reliable and he is a very effective free throw shooter.

Byrd also has a ton of defensive upside with his length, size and versatility. He can guard multiple positions, is super disruptive and has a knack for making the right reads. He overall is great at processing the game on that end. Byrd isn’t known for being a shutdown defender, but he will force turnovers and is a playmaker on that end with impressive block and steal production. He will need to continue to get stronger, which will complement his size and length well while enhancing his defensive versatility.

He started college pretty young, getting to campus at age 17, so Byrd isn’t as old as some of his other third-year peers in this class. He's a former four-star recruit who has blossomed into a fascinating NBA prospect and has the tools to impact the league right away.
