Prior to quarterbacks Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett taking the podium for the Washington Commanders on Tuesday, coach Ron Rivera reiterated the quarterback competition is ongoing.

Despite putting a lot of momentum for Sam Howell as the Week 1 starter for the organization, Rivera has made it clear that Brissett is still in the running to start for the Commanders in 2023.

Brissett took these comments in stride, saying he came to Washington to compete for the QB1 role.

"For sure. I wouldn’t be here if it was something else,” Brissett told the media. “Anybody that steps on the field, we’re all in competition... Somebody is trying to take our jobs, somebody’s trying to earn a job. That’s what it is every day in this league. I’ve been in this league a while and that has always stuck with me and this year is no different.”

The Commanders brought in Brissett to compete, just like he has in his previous stints with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns. Brissett has started for all of those teams and brings a lot of experience to the quarterback room, something Howell doesn't bring.

Brissett owns 48 starts as an NFL quarterback, amassing 10,350 passing yards and 48 touchdowns. Howell, however, has just one year, 169 yards and one touchdown to boast.

By making it a competition, the Commanders hope Brissett and Howell can bring out the best in one another as they both fight to become a starting quarterback in 2023.
