Commanders 'Open' to Trading DE Chase Young: Report

Chase Young could be traded by the Washington Commanders this offseason as he approaches the final season of his contract.

The Washington Commanders got Chase Young back on the field for practice Tuesday after not attending the first two weeks of OTA's, but there's a chance the former No. 2 overall pick may not see the field in a game for the team again.

Sports Illustrated insider Albert Breer is reporting that the Commanders could look to trade Young this offseason.

"Teams coming out of the spring thinking they need more help may make trade calls on Young (it seems unlikely the Washington brass would move him ahead of a must-win year, but I know they’d be open to listening), and there’s a pretty surprising number of accomplished pass rushers still on the market," Breer writes.

Given the fact that Young's fifth-year option was declined earlier this offseason, it makes sense as to why the Commanders would be willing to part ways with him. Young is set to be a free agent alongside fellow first-round defensive end Montez Sweat this offseason, and the two could be competing for future money in Washington.

"The Commanders have already paid Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen on the interior of the defensive line, and giving two more pass rushers, in Young and Montez Sweat, big contracts might be tough. So as Young tries to prove he can get healthy and back to himself again, he and Sweat might be competing for the last spot," Breer writes.

That being said, the Commanders have yet to trade Young yet, and Washington would certainly appreciate the depth in this upcoming season on the defensive line, especially considering the amount of injuries that have piled up.

However, if the opportunity presents itself for the Commanders to get some value out of Young, Washington should listen.
