Pros:
Max Borghi is an intriguing RB prospect that will have an impact in the NFL as a pass catcher. He has been a strong contributor for the Cougars for three years now. The Washington State RB excels as a pass catcher. His hands are soft and he can make catches outside the frame while adjusting to inaccurate passes. Good route runner out of the backfield running option routes and even working vertically. He is a solid inside runner. He shows good vision and quick feet to make guys miss in the open field. He is a good gap scheme runner setting up his blocks and working off the backs of his puller. Borghi has plus contact balance and runs with great toughness. He shows some quality straight line burst. He makes solid cuts in the open field to make guys miss. Stays low, square and runs hard to pickup extra yards. Borghi shows a good understanding of leverage and angles. Displays a very strong stiff arm game.
Cons:
Max Borghi is undersized and not the most athletic prospect. He is still working on instincts as an inside runner. He needs work on pressing the line of scrimmage and reading the defense. Hips are a little tight which leads to less dynamic change of direction. He projects as a third down back but needs major work in pass pro. Needs to take better angles when framing up defenders and just overall better technique.
Summary:
Max Borghi projects to be a change of pace back at the next level that plays on obvious passing downs. He wins with his quickness, burst and amazing pass catching skills. He is a tough nose player that can play some special teams. Borghi is not impressive with his size to athletic profile but can make up for it with his toughness and skills.
Background:
Born on April 23h, 1999, Max Borghi attended Pomona High School in Arvada, Colorado as a multisport player in football and track. Borghi was a versatile weapon throughout high school, posting 3,987 rushing yards and 57 touchdowns on 468 carries. He also excelled as a receiver, accumulating 79 receptions for 1,113 yards and ten touchdowns. His performance as a senior earned him All-State first-team and State Player of the Year honors for the 5A class in Colorado. Borghi was ranked a three-star running back prospect by 247SportsComposite in the 2018 class. Despite offers from multiple other schools such as Colorado, California, Arizona, North Carolina, Utah, and more, he enrolled at Washington State. Borghi contributed significantly for a freshman, taking 72 carries for 366 yards and eight ground scores while making 53 receptions for 347 yards and four receiving touchdowns. His role grew in 2019 as Borghi amassed 127 carries for 817 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns with 86 receptions for 597 yards and five receiving touchdowns. Unfortunately, a preseason back injury combined with a COVID-shortened PAC-12 schedule limited Borghi to a single game in 2020. Instead of declaring for the draft, he returned to the Cougars for a fourth and final season. While he performed admiralty in 2021, Borghi’s production was comparable to his sophomore campaign. After the college season, he received and accepted an invitation to the NFLPA Bowl. Borghi has since decided to forgo any remaining college eligibility and enter the 2022 NFL draft. Given his expertise as a receiver out of the backfield, Borghi is currently expected to be a late day-three draft selection.
