ESPN Insider Field Yates reports that the New Orleans Saints have restructured the contract of S Marcus Maye on Wednesday. According to Yates, the Saints have created nearly $4.9 million of salary cap space by converting $6 million of Maye's 2023 compensation into a signing bonus.

Maye, who turns 30 in March, was originally a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the New York Jets out of Florida. In five seasons with the Jets he had 6 interceptions, broke up 24 passes, and recorded 3.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss.

New Orleans signed Maye to a three-year contract worth a reported $28.5 million dollars last offseason. He missed seven games with injuries for the Saints in 2022. In his 10 contests, Maye had 60 tackles, broke up two passes, forced a fumble, and allowed 66.7% completion percentage in coverage.

Maye and Tyrann Mathieu were both signed last offseason to be a completely new safety tandem for the Saints secondary. New Orleans finished the year ranked fifth in total defense and second against the pass.

The Saints entered the offseason nearly $60 million above the 2023 salary cap. Maye's restructured deal is one of many moves we'll see from the team before the official start of NFL free agency on March 15.
