Caitlin Clark Passes Sue Bird on Career Double-Doubles List

It seems like every game Caitlin Clark is passing someone in the record books, or adding to a record she already holds. Clark found her statistical achievements discussed yet again during the Indiana Fever's 106-92 win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday.

The Fever star scored 22 points to go with 10 assists, passing her own mark for the most 20 point and 10 assist games in a single season. It also gave her her 29th career double-double. And while that didn't set a new WNBA mark, it is still wildly impressive nonetheless, especially when put into proper context.

Clark has already passed WNBA legend Sue Bird on the all-time list. Bird had 28 career double-doubles, in 580 games played. This was just the 82nd game of Clark's young career.

The feat put Clark into third all-time for guards, trailing only Courtney Vandersloot and Courtney Williams. Vandersloot has 63 in 452 games, while Williams has 31 in 367. Of course, both players are still active, but it is clearly only a matter of time before Clark walks them down on this list.

Clark currently sits at third in the league in scoring and is first in assists. She carries the highest assist average of all-time, and she is scoring or assisting on more points than anyone ever has before.

Kelsey Mitchell Also Headed for History

Clark (who was originally slated to be suspended for the game before her 8th technical foul was rescinded) and her backcourt mate Kelsey Mitchell outscored the entire Liberty starting five by themselves in the first half.

In the process, Mitchell registered her 17th consecutive game of 20 or more points, pouring in 28. Mitchell has the most consecutive 20 point games in a single season, and this performance brings her within 3 of A'ja Wilson's overall record of 20-straight.

The Fever are seemingly always in the spotlight. But said spotlight has shined white-hot following the events of Saturday's win over the Sky that saw DiJonai Carrington ejected for a flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham.

Indiana coach Stephanie White faced some criticism for comments she made in support of Carrington in the aftermath, though she clarified those remarks and took a harsher stance prior to the Liberty game. White also made it clear how she wished her team could focus on the great basketball it is playing and not all the noise swirling around them.

Well, that wish came true against New York, as the Fever proved they belong near the top of the list of contenders in the WNBA.
