If only Ruben Amorim had fallen out with Jason Wilcox just a few weeks earlier ...

Manchester United are 16 points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal, yet the most optimistic (and deluded) of Red Devils supporters have theorized their once beleaguered and misprofiled side could be contending for the title had the Michael Carrick-led renaissance not been so delayed.

United are continuing to roll with their new interim manager at the helm. They’ve navigated an array of challenges at the start of his second stint at Old Trafford; downing the division’s best, demonstrating a gritty edge while also overcoming in-game setbacks.

Manchester United are back, folks, and the impressive degree of their resurgence overseen by Carrick is shown by how pretty the Premier League table looks for the Red Devils since the Englishman returned to the Theatre of Dreams.

It started perfectly for Carrick. A Manchester derby at Old Trafford proved to be the perfect cauldron for a dream second debut, with United running out comfortable 2–0 winners over City in the middle of January. The Red Devils followed up that triumph by defeating actual league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates.

United then ran into a few problems against West Ham United, Everton and Crystal Palace, with Benjamin Šeško’s strikes bailing them out on all three occasions. Nevertheless, the Slovenian’s transformation into a newly potent finisher has paved the way for a staggering start under Carrick. By taking 23 points from his first nine Premier League matches (including the two-game burst back in 2021), the former midfielder equaled the best start to any managerial career in the competition’s history.

A loss to Newcastle was swiftly followed up with a convincing victory over Aston Villa, ensuring that there is still no team which has picked up more points than United since the interim appointment.

As a result, the Red Devils have opened up a gap above Chelsea and Liverpool in the race to play Champions League football next season. Even Aston Villa have been caught, with United climbing as high as third for the first time since 2023 at the start of March.

Manchester City have let the gap to league leaders Arsenal open up again in recent weeks. The Gunners, as a result of their rearranged game with Wolverhampton Wanderers, have played a game more than their rivals, but have their own future in their hands.

At the other end of the table, West Ham and Leeds United’s respective improvements have thrust a wretched and depleted Tottenham Hotspur into the mire. Spurs, now led by Igor Tudor after Thomas Frank’s overdue sacking, have picked up the fewest points in the league since Carrick retook the reins in Manchester.

Both clubs met in last year’s Europa League final. Spurs emerged as winners on the night yet there is only one team on the up now.
