Sunderland will be reunited with a very familiar face in George Honeyman when they face Millwall at The Den this weekend.

Honeyman started his career right here on Wearside in the Sunderland academy. In 2015, at the age of 21, the midfielder got a taste of first team football when he was loaned out to National League side Gateshead.

During his time at Gateshead, Honeyman played nine times and scored one goal before returning to Sunderland's under-21 side.

Before the end of the season he also appeared in the Premier League, playing 38 minutes against Watford on the final day of the season.

Honeyman spent a further three years in the first team picture before moving to Hull City. The midfielder spent three years at the tigers before moving to Millwall in the summer.

The Prudhoe-born midfielder joined Sunderland's academy at the age of 10 and made his debut for the first team ten years later the age of 20. That came in a 2-0 defeat away to Bradford in the FA Cup.

Honeyman started his first game for Sunderland in another 2-0 defeat away from home, this time in the Premier League against West Bromwich Albion.

The academy product made five Premier League appearances prior to the club's relegation to the Championship.

During the club's first season back in the Championship, Honeyman made 42 appearances, scoring six goals and registering two assists. At the end of the season the club were relegated to League One.

Prior to the League One season Honeyman, was named club captain at the age of just 23. It made him the first academy product to be named as club captain since Michael Gray.

He scored six times for the second season running, also adding another three assists. The season ended when Sunderland lost the play-off final against Charlton.

The play-off final would be Honeyman's final game for the club. The midfielder left the club having played 97 times for the Black Cats, scoring 15 goals and assisting another five.

Honeyman joined the lions on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee from Hull in the Summer.

The midfielder has made 25 appearances so far this season for Millwall with one goal and one assist.

He has also been sent ff in his short career at Millwall, receiving two yellow cards in the Carabao Cup against Cambridge United.

In his second game for the club, Honeyman was awarded man of the match in a 3-2 win against Coventry. During the game, he scored as well as winning three tackles and providing four key passes.

In his fifth game as Sunderland, captain Honeyman led his side to a 4-1 away win at Gillingham. The win seen Sunderland take 10 points from their first four league games that season

During the game Honeyman got a goal and an assist, scoring a goal from the edge of the box that floated into the top corner before assisting the fourth goal, which was scored by Josh Maja.

You can't even think of the name 'George Honeyman' without also thinking 'seven out of ten.'

Honeyman was the ultimate seven out of ten player at Sunderland. Rarely spectacular, never poor. He just consistently did what he did, and we probably didn't appreciate that enough at the time.
