Joe Anderson has told Sunderland fans to expect a ball-playing defender when he gets going for Sunderland.

Anderson joined Sunderland from Everton on deadline day, bring an end to his seven-year spell on Merseyside.

He was not able to break into the Toffees’ first team during that time, meaning fans know precious little about him.

However, he says he likes to offer a team a lot more than just solid defending.

"First and foremost, like any centre-back, I like to defend but I can bring a bit of presence in the changing rooms as a character - I was captain of Everton U21s - and I think I can bring a bit of humour,” he told safc.com

"On the ball, I like to step in, play, hit my passes and almost become a midfielder in some sense and get the team started on attacks.

"I came to Liverpool's academy very young and I had a few different position changes, then I made that step to Everton and I felt at the time it was the best decision.

“Over the years I've developed from a boy into a man and as far as my game is concerned I've come in-field from out wide, and I think that was also the best thing for me because it has brought out the best in my ability and attributes.

"Now this is 100 percent the right move and I just can't wait to get started."
