Sunderland have been handed an injury boost with Ross Stewart only looking at four months out with his Achilles injury.

The injury will put Stewart out for the season, although Sky Sports' Keith Downie reports initial fears were that he could be facing a career-altering 18 months on the sidelines.

As per the report, Stewart will not be back in time for pre-season training, which will be a major boost to Sunderland.

It may also affect the club's deadline day plans, with them no longer needing to consider a long-term replacement for the Scot.

Stewart injured his Achilles in the FA Cup draw at Fulham as he attempted to latch onto a pass.

He was stretchered off and was seen after the game on crutches while wearing a protective boot.

It has emerged that he has not suffered a full rupture, though. Scans revealed it was only a 30% tear, which changes the landscape dramatically.

Sunderland are hoping to sign at least one striker on deadline day to fill the void for the rest of the season, with Ellis Simms the top target.
