Sunderland have agreed a deal with Standard Liege to bring former Spurs youngster Romaine Mundle back to England.

The winger was highly rated at Tottenham, scoring seven goals and registering five assists in 24 Premier League 2 appearances in 2022/23, but he rejected a new deal to try his luck in Belgium instead.

That hasn’t worked out especially well for the 20-year-old, and he will now return to England with Sunderland agreeing for a fee for him – as per Fabrizio Romano.

Although yet to really sparkle, the deal does represent something of a coup for Sunderland, who have beaten both Swansea and Stoke to his signature.

Mundle is a winger who I very comfortable playing on either side of the pitch, which was a position Sunderland had identified early as one they wanted to strengthen this month.

His arrival will, though, likely disappoint those urging the club to bring in experience and proven commodities this window, although with Jack Clark and Patrick Roberts already here and Abdoullah Ba emerging, it’s a position in which Sunderland are already strong.

Mundle never actually started a game for Standard Liege, although he did make six appearances from the substitutes bench.
