Sunderland appear to have completed their January business with the capture of midfielder Callum Styles from Barnsley.

The Hungarian international has joined on an initial loan deal with an option to buy in the summer.

Styles will provide another midfield option for Michael Beale and he can also provide cover at left wing-back.

The 23-year-old underwent minor surgery in January to remove his appendix, but is expected to be available again very quickly.

After completing the deal, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “Callum is an interesting player, who has the ability to play on the left side of central midfield or slightly wider in a full back or wing back role.

"So we feel his quality and flexibility will be a real benefit to us throughout the remainder of the season.

"Having reached an agreement in principle last week, we had an unavoidable delay due to Callum’s illness, but after reviewing his progress, we are now delighted that he’s here and we look forward to his imminent return to action.”

Styles is Sunderland’s third and in all likelihood final signing of the transfer window, joining Leo Hjelde and Romaine Mundle, although no striker was signed despite that appearing to be the squad’s most pressing need.

Meanwhile, Pritchard was the only permanent departure, although Nectarios Triantis (Hibernian), Jewsison Bennette (Aris), Jay Matete (Oxford) and Jack Diamond (Carlisle) all departed on loan.
