Alabama Women's Basketball Knocks Down No. 12 Texas A&M

The Alabama women's basketball team grabbed a win over No. 12 Texas A&M inside Reed Arena on Thursday night. The Crimson Tide (17-11) took down the Aggies (22-6), 76-63.

This was the first time in program history that Alabama took down two top-15 ranked opponents in back-to-back games.

It was also Alabama's first-ever win against Texas A&M, after losing each of the first nine meetings, including seven by double digits.

Junior Jasmine Walker led Alabama with a career high of 24 points and nine rebounds. She also hit a career high six three-pointers.

Junior Ariyah Copeland followed with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Cierra Johnson also contributed to the victory with 14 points and six rebounds.

"Ariyah played with a lot of energy tonight and she really rose to the challenge,” Crimson Tide coach Kristy Curry said in a statement. “She hasn’t had the best few games, but she looked like she did against Auburn a few weeks ago. I thought that Ashley Knight came in well as a reliever and got the big three-point play before the half, those two together were really special tonight.

"What can I say about Ariyah, she had a double-double against one of the best centers in this league and it was huge for us tonight. It was a credit to everybody – Jordan (Lewis) had nine assists to three turnovers in this environment. It was an incredible effort from our kids.”

Alabama (17-11, 7-8 SEC) got off to a hot start after Copeland drained a 3-pointer, which pushed the Crimson Tide to its 10-point run. Alabama ended the first quarter tied to Texas A&M, 12-12.

Johnson marked the second quarter with a 3-pointer, pushing Alabama ahead 15-12. Sophomore Megan Abrams nailed a jumper which started Alabama’s eight-point run, giving it the 28-17 lead. A layup by Copeland put Alabama ahead 39-23 walking into the half.

Texas A&M (22-6, 10-5 SEC) was the first to score in the third quarter, decreasing Alabama’s lead 39-27. Walker drained a 3-pointer before Johnson immediately followed with a jumper in the paint, increasing Alabama’s lead to 48-31. Another layup by Johnson closed out the third quarter, Alabama leading 58-42.

Alabama walked into the fourth quarter with energy. Johnson secured a 3-pointer to push Alabama up 63-50. Texas A&M fought back toward the end of the quarter but two free throws from junior Jordan Lewis closed out the game with a 76-53 victory for the Crimson Tide.
