TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A pair of home runs by second baseman Ed Johnson for No. 20 Alabama baseball made all the difference on Friday afternoon as the Crimson Tide downed the High Point Panthers, 9-4.

Alabama was originally scheduled to make a road trip out to Malibu, Calif., to play at Pepperdine this weekend. However, projected inclement weather forced the Crimson Tide to make a schedule change on Wednesday, opting instead for a three-game series with the Panthers this weekend.

"I thought that was a great game for us," Alabama coach Brad Bohannon said after the game. "[...] Really glad the game played out the way it did. It's not always going to be easy, but I really liked the feel in the dugout when we made some mistakes today and when we were behind."

High Point jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when a fielding error by Alabama first baseman Drew Williamson resulted in a run. However, the Crimson Tide responded in the bottom of the inning when designated hitter Dominic Tamez doubled to right-center field, bringing home shortstop Jim Jarvis.

In the bottom of the second, catcher Mac Guscette hit his third home run of the year — a solo shot to left field that gave Alabama a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Panthers brought in two more runs to once again take a one-run lead. With the bases loaded, Crimson Tide relief pitcher Brock Blatter hit High Point center fielder Javon Fields with a pitch to force a run across the plate. A bases-loaded single scored another run, putting the Panthers back ahead.

In the bottom of the inning, Alabama second baseman Johnson crushed a two-run home run off of the scoreboard in left field, catapulting the Crimson Tide back into a lead that they would not surrender for the remainder of the game. However, Johnson wasn’t finished just yet.

In the bottom of the seventh, Johnson once again smacked a home run. With two outs on the board and runners at the corners, Johnson hit a home run into the playground past the wall in left field and increasing the Crimson Tide’s lead to 9-4.

At the end of the game, the final scoreboard read the same: 9-4 in favor of the Crimson Tide. With the win, Alabama improves to 6-0 on the season while High Points falls to 3-2.

"It's going to get tougher as the season goes on, but just really pleased with the offense," Bohannon said. "A lot of contact up and down. We've got a nice balance of left and right, some athleticism and a lot of strength. Got a lot of older guys and they're doing a great job."

Blatter (1-0) was credited with the win on the mound for Alabama, while Sam Garcia (0-1) for High Point was saddled with the loss. The Crimson Tide will take on the Panthers once again on Saturday in Game 2 of the series (4 p.m. CT, SEC Network+).
