Pittman Gives Timeline for Decision on Starting Quarterback

For first time in Pittman's tenure a quarterback battle will take place during spring practices

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — When Sam Pittman met with the media ahead of Arkansas' spring practices, he said it could be awhile before fans know its new starting quarterback. Three season with KJ Jefferson and one with Feleipe Franks gave the Razorbacks stability at a position which saw nine different passers start a game from 2017-2019.

Now, Pittman along with new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino will be tasked at finding a new quarterback for 2024. Jacolby Criswell and Malachi Singleton return as two former 4-star prospects and backups to Jefferson last season. Boise State transfer Taylen Green, former Hogs' pitcher Austin Ledbetter and true freshman KJ Jackson are newcomers to the room, each talented with strong arms and ability to scramble.

The fifth-year head coach says he plans on making a decision following an extensive look at his five quarterbacks on the roster.

"We can," Pittman said about naming a quarterback during the spring. "With some of the things we're doing in 7-on-7, it's going to be a lengthier period with more reps and things of that nature. We have to see who can throw."

Obviously, Green has a little bit of an edge right now in the leadership department since he transfers in as a former starter at the Group of Five level.  The 6-6, 215 pound dual threat has played in 26 games the past two seasons including leading the Broncos to a Mountain West title over UNLV last season. He's completed 60% of his passes for 3,794 yards, 25 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His ability to run can give Petrino's offense a different dimension as Green rushed for 1,026 yards and 19 scores the past two years.

"I think [Green] might have a little advantage on all of the guys because he ran a team," Pittman said. "It may come a little bit more natural right now for him than everybody else, at this point."

Most expect Criswell to make a run for the starting role. Pittman didn't count him out Tuesday as a guy that can spin the football.

"[Criswell's] got a strong arm," Pittman said. "He’s a guy that you can count on work ethic wise. I certainly wish he will continue to get more vocal, and those leadership skills verbally in being more vocal. It'll be a battle between [Criswell and Green]."
