Athlon Sports places Auburn Tigers last in SEC West in spring power rankings

Athlon Sports does not have a lot of faith in Hugh Freeze and what he's shown through three months on the Plains.

Steve Lassan of Athlon recently released his 2023 spring SEC power rankings, with Auburn coming in at No. 11 overall in the conference and last in the SEC West.

Lassan had thoughts on "what to watch" for on both sides of the ball for the Tigers.

"What to Watch on Offense: Quarterback Robby Ashford's development under coach Hugh Freeze and coordinator Philip Montgomery is crucial with the second transfer window opening in mid-April. The line is just as big of a concern for Auburn with four new starters, with three transfers expected to win jobs."

Athlon describes Ashford's development as "crucial" days after releasing their 2023 SEC quarterback rankings - with Ashford at the bottom of the list.

"What to Watch on Defense: New coordinator Ron Roberts inherits a solid foundation, especially in the secondary where the Tigers return cornerbacks D.J. James and Nehemiah Pritchett. How fast can Roberts find replacements for standouts Derick Hall and Colby Wooden up front, along with linebacker Owen Pappoe?"

With the plethora of transfers coming in to aid the Tigers' losses on defensive line, there's reason to believe Roberts can revitalize what was a statistically average at best front seven. How Auburn bounces back in that department could be one of the biggest storylines of the upcoming season.
