Will Hugh Freeze let Philip Montgomery call plays for Auburn?

The Tigers have two great play-callers overseeing the offense this fall.

Will Hugh Freeze let Philip Montgomery call plays for Auburn?

In this story:

Freeze mentioned earlier in the spring that offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery would be calling most of the plays for Auburn's offense this fall.

The Tigers have had an interesting track record between head coaches and coordinators over the last decade, with former head coach Gus Malzahn being the primary play caller for several seasons before giving up the role and waffling back and forth for the rest of his Auburn tenure.

Auburn OC Mike Bobo apparently was not completely on track with how former coach Bryan Harsin liked to operate... and Eric Kiesau simply didn't get the job done last year for the Tigers.

Philip Montgomery has been around the college game for quite some time now, having piloted several record-breaking offenses - one of which featured a Heisman-winning quarterback.

Hugh Freeze, an excellent play-caller in his own right, was asked at SEC Media Days about whether or not he is committed to giving control to Montgomery this season.

"I hired Philip (Montgomery) to call plays now," Freeze said. :I have done this for years. I think at one point I was one of the better play callers in the country. I haven't felt like I was quite on my game. But I still could manage a game and figure out a way to win, and go to Arkansas and beat Arkansas or BYU, Virginia Tech or Syracuse. We won some big games. We also lost some probably that we shouldn't have lost and I have to look at myself with that, and while I still believe in our system, I think there's so many dynamics going on in the college game right now that to rebuild Auburn that it was very, very beneficial for me to get someone who has done it at a high level and has the capacity to do it."

Freeze noted that while Montgomery will be the main play-caller, there will be input and suggestions from Freeze alongside several staff members.

"Having said that, the game plan is formed by a lot of people and I will be involved in that and while Philip will call plays, I certainly reserve the right to jump in at any time and say that ‘I got a good feel right now. Let me help a little bit,'" Freeze said. "I want to be clear. Philip was hired to call the plays but that's what we're going to do but there's also going to be suggestions from a lot of other people including me."
