Where Auburn's wide receiver room stands heading into fall camp's second scrimmage

In this story:
Coach Hugh Freeze had a rather eventful press conference today with the official announcement of Peyton Thorne being named QB1 heading into week one’s game against UMass on September 2nd. Aside from this obviously important news Coach Freeze addressed several questions regarding the Wide Receiver room after a somewhat lackluster performance during this past Saturday’s scrimmage.
We will highlight some of what he had to say about this vital position group for the Auburn Tigers football program.
First and foremost, Coach Freeze stated that the receiver room had a much better week this week, commenting that during the scrimmage that there were “about 88 loafs during the scrimmage, although that is an exaggeration." The heat during the scrimmage was a major contributing factor to the lack of energy and explosiveness on the field across the board.
Tuesday night's practice was the best practice of fall camp thus far, according to Freeze. It marked several improvements in route running and reads across the board. Camden Brown was highlighted in the presser, as he returned to practice August 16th after recovering from injury. "He adds some much-needed depth to the room," Freeze said.
Several other receivers where highlighted as well as being solid and essential rotational players this upcoming season, the names that were mentioned where; Jay Fair, Ja’Varrius Johnson, Shane Hooks, Omari Kelly, Jyaire Shorter, Nick Mardner, and Caleb Burton III. Expect all of these young men to be frequently in the mix on game day.
Coach Freeze made a few other comments with regard to the performance of the Auburn Tigers receiving room over roughly the past decade, being genuinely shocked by the lack of a 1000-yard receiver, or at least one close to that during that time period. This is something Coach Freeze intends to change and said that this begins with competent recruiting. Hopefully someone can step into that role this season.
An important point was also made by Coach Freeze this afternoon with reference to the other position groups on the roster, noting that he doesn’t believe there is truly a 1st or 2nd team with position groups like the offensive and defensive lines, linebackers, and the secondary. Commenting that due to the high attrition rate within the SEC due to injuries during the season it is necessary to make everyone ready to play, because they likely will, expressing the need to be at least 2 or 3 deep in each one of these position groups.
