Baylor's Shea Langeliers Makes MLB Debut with Oakland Athletics

Athletics' No. 1 prospect called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to the majors on Tuesday

Welcome to the majors, Shea Langeliers.

The former Baylor Bears baseball catcher and Oakland's No. 1 prospect was called up to the Athletics organization on Tuesday after being selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2019 Major League Baseball draft.

Langeliers batted sixth for the Athletics as the team's designated hitter in his MLB debut on Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas, launching a double in his first career at-bat in the second inning before crossing home plate on a two-out RBI by Elvis Andrus to give Oakland an early 2-0 lead over the Rangers.

He concluded the night going 1-for-4 with three strikeouts, a double and a run scored, giving the catcher a .250 batting average to begin his major league career.

Oakland went on to defeat Texas 5-1 on Tuesday night.

Langeliers, a 24-year-old out of Portland, Oregon, spent three years in Waco, Texas before being drafted by the Atlanta Braves.

He was traded along with Cristian Pache, Ryan Cusick and Joey Estes to Oakland on March 14, 2022 in exchange for Matt Olson.

Through 92 games with Triple-A Las Vegas this season, Langeliers garnered a .283 batting average with 56 runs batted in, 19 home runs and five stolen bases.

Oakland Athletics General Manager David Forst had some kind words about the former Baylor Bear that were shared on social media.

During his time donning green and gold, he played both first base and catcher for the Bears. As a junior in 2019, Langeliers batted .308 with 42 RBI, 10 home runs and nine doubles.

As a senior at Keller High School in Keller, Texas, Langeliers compiled a .369 batting average with 31 RBI and six home runs. He was drafted in the 34th round of the 2016 MLB draft by the Toronto Blue Jays but decided to attend Baylor to play college baseball for the Bears.

Langeliers and the Athletics continue Oakland's road trip at Texas on Wednesday night, with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. Central Time.
