BYU Reportedly Set to Host Transfer Quarterback Brayden Schager

BYU will host Hawaii transfer quarterback Brayden Schager for a visit this weekend, according to 247Sports national analyst Mike Roach. Schager threw for over 3,500 yards at Hawaii last season and he has thrown for over 6,500 yards in his career. He threw 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season. Schager has one season of eligibility remaining. However, he could potentially apply for a waiver and get another season of eligibility for 2025.
BYU has offered a few different quarterbacks during this transfer cycle already and they all have one thing in common: mobility. Schager, however, is a little bit different. He averaged less than one yard per carry last season.
Schager, a native of Dallas, Texas, is a gifted deep thrower. He put his talents on display against a few Power Five teams this year. He averaged 353 passing yards per game against Vanderbilt and Stanford. He also threw six touchdowns in those two games. Schager's numbers are more impressive in context. Hawaii was one of the worst running teams in the country - they ranked 129th in rushing offense last season. Schager was able to put up big numbers even when opposing defenses knew that Hawaii needed to throw the football.
It's challenging to consistently field good offenses with high quarterback turnover. If Schager picks BYU and becomes the starter in 2024, the Cougars would be on the lookout for the next starter again in 2025. Ideally, BYU would bring in a quarterback with more than one year of eligibility remaining. It’s worth mentioning, however, that Aaron Roderick has publicly stated that his top priority when recruiting quarterbacks is to win right away.
