On Tuesday, BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill met with the media. Hill said that sophomore safety Talan Alfrey "has a chance" play for the first time this season against Iowa State. Alfrey suffered an injury during Fall camp and has not been available this season.

Alfrey was one of a handful of injuries that have tested the depth at safety this season. Projected starter Micah Harper suffered a season-ending injury during the first scrimmage of Fall camp. Tanner Wall, who started a few games earlier this season, also suffered a season-ending injury midway through the season.

Without Alfrey, Harper and Wall, BYU has turned to Ethan Slade and Crew Wakley as the starting safeties. Underclassmen Raider Damuni and Preston Rex have also played critical snaps for BYU. Welcoming Alfrey back into the fold would be a big boost for the safety room with three critical games remaining.

Hill was also asked about the injuries to John Nelson, Caden Haws, John Henry Daley, and Marcus McKenzie. He classified all four of those players as "highly doubtful" for the game against Iowa State. He said John Henry Daley could play again soon, but the rest of those guys will be out for a while. BYU's punt team hasn't been the same without gunner Marcus McKenzie.

BYU is one win away from bowl eligibility. The Cougars and the Cyclones kickoff at 8:15 Mountain Time and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
