On Tuesday evening, Herriman linebacker Ephraim Asiata committed to BYU. Asiata, who is the son of former Utah legend Matt Asiata, picked the Cougars over competing offers from Utah, USC, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and San Diego State. Asiata took official visits to BYU, Utah, and USC during the process.

Given his obvious family connections to Kyle Whittingham and the Utah football program, Ephraim was viewed as a Utah lean during most of his recruitment. Over the last several months, however, BYU's defensive staff did an excellent job of forming a relationship with Ephraim and his family. Those relationships won out in the end and Asiata committed to play his college football in blue instead of red.

Asiata is listed at 6'2 and he played outside linebacker for Herriman High School. He is listed as a linebacker by recruiting services and that's likely where he'll play at BYU unless he grows into a defensive end. Asiata is only scratching the surface of his potential. If BYU's defensive staff can help him maximize his talents, he could be a special player for the Cougars.

It's impossible to talk about Ephraim Asiata without mentioning his miraculous path back to the football field. When Ephraim was 15, he was with two friends when they were shot by a classmate. Tragically, his two friends passed away and Ephraim was given just a one-percent chance to live.

Miraculously, Ephraim not only survived, but also recovered to the point of being able to return to the football field. You can read more about Ephraim's story on the Vikings official website.

Regardless of what happens in his college football career, Asiata should be celebrated for his miraculous recovery and ability to overcome adversity.
