Colorado's Alton McCaskill IV plans to redshirt

Alton McCaskill will likely be put on the shelf until next year. The former AAC Freshman of the year transfer from Houston has asked to be redshirted, according to coach Deion Sanders.

Coach Prime addressed McCaskill's lack of production and said the Buffs running back came in his office yesterday and they agreed having him sit out was the next step. A tough run for the Houston native after being in a yellow non-contact jersey for the start of the season.

McCaskill tore his ACL while he was with the Cougars in April of 2022 and was sidelined throughout CU's off-season conditioning. He has appeared in a few game this season, including Saturday night's loss at UCLA.

A long-awaited debut for McCaskill only to be shutdown with limited reps. He ran for 981 yards and had 16 rushing touchdowns while at Houston. McCaskill will preserve a year of eligibility to work on his strength and footwork. Sanders mentioned his top-tier transfer wasn't where he wanted to be in the process and felt an extra year would be helpful.

“Alton came in my office yesterday and he wanted to be redshirted, Sanders said. "He’s one of my favorite human beings on this team. He wants it. But he does understand it’s been awhile since he’s had his full strength, potential and ability to cut and explosion. He’s a great team guy, he’s a great young man.”

McCaskill will have three years of eligibility remaining starting in 2024.
