Duke Basketball Treasure Becomes Head Coach Again

Duke basketball's Steve Wojciechowski is heading to the G League.

In 2014, Steve Wojciechowski left the Duke basketball bench, where he spent 15 years as an assistant to Mike Krzyzewski, to take over the reins at Marquette. He was the head coach there for seven seasons, amassing a 128-95 record. But he reached the NCAA Tournament only twice and got the boot following the 2020-21 campaign.

And he hasn't coached since, outside of a summer serving as an assistant coach for USA Basketball's 2022 AmeriCup squad.

However, on Friday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the 46-year-old Wojciechowski is now set to become the next head coach of the Salt Lake City Stars, the G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz.

Considering the Jazz have a young roster and three first-round draft picks this year, the former Blue Devil treasure should be instrumental in developing talent for the franchise.

As a four-year Duke basketball guard in the 1990s, Steve Wojciechowski, who became a McDonald's All-American after starring for Cardinal Gibbons School in Baltimore, never averaged more than seven points per game.

That said, as a junior and senior, Wojo finished among the top five in the ACC in assists on his way to earning all-conference honors two years in a row. Plus, his 2.5 steals per game as a junior remains the third-highest season average by a Blue Devil in program history. Then as a senior, he became the NABC Defensive Player of the Year.

He is best remembered as one of the Blue Devils' all-time most passionate backcourt pieces, demonstrated by his frequent floor slaps on defense.
