Insider Sees Duke Basketball Legend on 'Hot Seat' as Head Coach

In this story:
Duke basketball great Johnny Dawkins boasts a 287-202 overall record between his seven seasons as a head coach at UCF and eight seasons at Stanford before that. But the recent National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame inductee (as a player) has only two NCAA Tournament appearances in those 15 years.

And as Burner Ball insider "Trilly Donovan" noted on Friday in an article listing Dawkins as the only non-interim Big 12 head coach on the hot seat, the 59-year-old former Duke basketball assistant under Mike Krzyzewski could use a winning campaign in his school's first year since moving from the American Athletic Conference:
"Johnny Dawkins has one tournament appearance in seven seasons at UCF. While that is one more than his predecessor, things are different now in Orlando. The expectations are raised thanks to an expedited transition into big boy basketball. Dawkins survived this off-season, but is firmly on the hot seat heading into 23-24 because of a reportedly rocky relationship with athletic director Terry Mohajir.
"Mohajir didn't hire Dawkins, so he's less likely to go to bat for him if things turn south. Dawkins likely needs an NCAA Tournament appearance this season to continue his tenure at UCF."
Dawkins lost his top three scorers from a team that finished 19-15 and went to the NIT. So he's in instant-rebuild mode, welcoming six transfers and one three-star recruit to Orlando.
Furthermore, the schedule is daunting throughout. UCF's second game is at Miami, fresh off its first trip to the Final Four.
Then the Knights are slated to host two of the past three national champions in new Big 12 foes Kansas and Baylor. That's not to mention road games against Kansas State and Texas, plus home-and-away meetings with Houston and West Virginia.
Nevertheless, a glass-half-full outlook would say the Duke basketball treasure, who ranks No. 2 on the Blue Devils' all-time scoring list and has his No. 24 forever hanging from Cameron Indoor Stdaium's rafters, now has an opportunity to become a coveted head coach again if he manages some big-time wins in his inaugural Big 12 campaign.
"Everything I do as a coach -- I measure it against what I did as a player and coach at Duke... It's a high standard."

"We're excited for this inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference for our program," Dawkins said earlier this summer. "Having an opportunity to play two previous national champions on our home court is something that should be great for the city of Orlando as well as our fan base."
