Tre Jones: "We Shouldn't Care Who's Scoring"

Tre Jones finished the two-game exhibition season with 24 points, eight assists and five steals in 48 minutes.

The sophomore point guard and one of three team captains, Jones discussed the message from coach Mike Krzyzewski to the team after the win over Fort Valley State.

“He was talking about it at the half,” Jones said of Coach K, “That’s how it should be. We shouldn’t care who’s scoring or how much people are scoring. It could be a different person every night. We just have to be in the moment with them. That’s how this team is going to be, and that’s how we’re going to be.”

The resounding 126-57 win came on the heels of a 69-63 win over Northwest Missouri State in the exhibition opener. That close result left the players and coaches unsatisfied.

“We were able to learn from that game just like any other game,” Jones said. “We didn’t play as well as we wanted to the other night, but it was an exhibition game—our first game together. So we were learning from it. We got after it in practice these last few days and came out and played like we wanted to.”

Seven Blue Devils scored in double-figures against Fort Valley State. Nine had assists and 10 had steals. The team’s depth should be an advantage this season.

“I think it helps us out a lot,” Jones said. “We have a lot of depth, more than we have in years past. Just having that depth could be huge for us, just wearing teams out and keeping guys fresh for us.”
