How Bill Belichick vs. Duke's Diaz Presents Elite Defensive Battle

In this story:
It’s rivalry week for the Duke Blue Devils as they host the North Carolina Tar Heels for a chance to ring the Victory Bell.
Duke is coming off a tough road loss to Georgia Tech, ending their unbeaten start to the season. They’re hosting a North Carolina team hot off a ranked victory over the then-No. 25 Pittsburgh Panthers as the two rivals collide in another variation of a storied rivalry across collegiate sports.

One of the most underrated storylines coming into this game is the defensive prowess of the two programs' head coaches: UNC’s Bill Belichick and Duke’s Manny Diaz. In a must-win game for both teams, the two coaches could make this a low-scoring affair at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The Best Defense Wins

This sounds cliché, but it's true: the winner of North Carolina vs. Duke will likely be determined by which team's better defense makes the last stand to seal the win. The Blue Devils' defense under Diaz and Jonathan Patke has shown rapid improvement in downfield coverage this season and has set the edge very well thanks to their standout pass rushers, Tyshon Reed Jr. and Bryce Davis.
Duke also has a linebacker corps with depth and talent that allows them to rotate players and not miss a beat. The secondary is also capable of limiting explosive plays and has a litany of new starters the Blue Devils added from the transfer portal.

For the Tar Heels, your defense is expected to be stout under Belichick. North Carolina is stout up front with star Melkart Abou Jaoude, the ACC’s best defensive tackle this season, and former walk-on Xavier Lewis. Derek McDonald is one of the league leaders in tackles, and safety Greg Smith has been phenomenal as a starter this fall, leading the Tar Heels in interceptions. Although, Smith was listed as questionable on the initial injury report.
Both groups will force either offense to truly grind out the game. This feels like a game where it could get physical, ugly, and become a low-scoring affair that many fans from 30 years ago would be screaming with joy but modern fandom is agonizing at the sloppy play.
Why Duke May Hold Defensive Advantage

As I mentioned before, Duke’s defense has not allowed many explosive plays through the air, which North Carolina would love to do with their offense. The Tar Heels bolster players who can generate big plays that could change the perplexity of the game. However, this Duke defense loves to disguise their shell rotations, and against the Tar Heels, they’ll likely play with more two-high shell looks or rotate into it.
North Carolina may hold a slight advantage along the defensive front, but Duke seems more well-rounded at linebacker and deeper at edge rusher.
